Genre: What is it?

In this post I will attempt to explain what Genre is and through that explain its significance in all media, especially, music videos. Having already discussed genre in depth in my A1 Blog, I believe that the main focus of this post should be genre in music.

The simple definition of Genre is " a style or category of art, music, or literature". It is used to attract certain target audiences and it makes it easier for the public to decide which music to listen to, based on the genres that they enjoy listening. Without it, everything would be unorganized and unstructured due to a lack of guidelines. It can be classified as one of the most important factors in the audiences's decision regarding which music they will listen to.

Music genre is essential and is the first label that is placed on a band; proving its significance. it is a way to target specific audiences as both the artist and viewer benefit from the categorization of the piece of music.

Despite genre being there to classify the music videos into separate categories, overlapping of genres is possible and fairly common; mostly known as a fusion. Additionally, several new genres have arisen over time as well as sub categories for existing ones.

Even if an artist attempts to create a text without reference to genre, there is almost always at least some relation or inspiration from existing genres.

Genre is not only a way of categorizing but also a way of helping decide the target audience, and enabling the audience to find content they are likely to like as well as bringing audiences with the same taste together.

The purpose of discussing genre is this post was to set the base for my exploration of music video genres which will help me and my group to decide the genre/s upon which we will like to base our music video.
