So it turns out that just like I had to drop a really good idea in A1, I had to drop one in A2 as well. At least on the bright side, we hadn't completed most of the planning tasks for this idea yet like I had in A1 when our idea got rejected.
Additionally, this time we were the ones who dropped our "perfect idea".
The problem began when we started trying to make some preliminary shots, just to see how we’d achieve all of those ideas. The plan had always been to use the Inspect Element feature on Chrome for the computer shots, and a backdoor equivalent (through the “Shortcuts” app) on iPhone. But we quickly realized that these features have their limits (for example, they don’t work on Netflix or YouTube), and for large swaths of the video, we would have to create intricate Photoshop recreations and somehow make them function like real apps on a phone. This would present a major logistical issue, and it was becoming clear that each shot would take a huge amount of work, and the video would likely end up taking way more time than we have before our final exams. We also realized that with all the different types of original footage we wanted to create, it was going to be far more extensive than we had thought: TED Talk, news report, vlog, selfies, Netflix thumbnails, WikiHow pictures, Facebook pictures. This would amount to several different set-ups and locations.
Ironically, while we were worried the concept called for too much distinct original footage and images, our teacher was beginning to get concerned that video would not contain enough original footage. We started to grow unsure about whether screen recordings of websites and operating systems would qualify as “original content” under the syllabus guidelines. We reluctantly decided that it wasn’t worth the risk, and abandoned our perfect idea.
This brought us back to the drawing board. But like I said in my As blog after the terrorism idea got rejected, not every setback is a loss and mostly setbacks set us on a better path and help us improve and become better.
This setback too brought a bright side as it resulted in us choosing a new song which we felt was better than "Retrograde" for our purposes. And no, I won't name it in this post. You will have to wait for the next one.
